CV for David Hicks

I went to school at Stowupland High School, Suffolk, England, where I gained 3 A-levels (Maths(A), Physics(A), Chemistry(C)) and 1 AS-level (Further Maths(A)). I then attended university for a year at UEA, Norwich, England. My second year of university study was spent at UVic, Victoria, Canada, after which I went back to Norwich for my third year and gained a 2:1 in Computer Science.

I then worked over the summer at Moneyfacts on an early web-indexing style search engine. The system came to absolutely nothing in the end - the dotcom boom at its finest, people being hired to work on projects with only the vaguest idea of how to make any money out of them.

After this I attended Reading, UK, for a year where I gained an MSc in Information Systems Engineering. I then moved on to work at Harlequin (later to be the somewhat generically named "Global Graphics") as a systems programmer, working on the company's website and internal source code control / build system. This was a tad tedious, and hardly at the cutting edge of new technology, but a good grounding in how source code control and build systems work (I'd managed to miss that at university through spending that second year in Canada doing fun robotics instead).

After Global Graphics I did a short stint at Tesco as a cleaner, followed by working at Parkside school as a Learning Support Assistant. This was actually fun. I was then internally moved over to work as VLE administrator for the Cambridge Federation of Secondary Schools, using the DigitalBrain VLE. This was not fun.

I left Parkside to study for a PGCE (teaching qualification - secondary, ICT) at Canterbury Christchurch University College, Canterbury, UK. I had to leave the course before completing my studies for family reasons, but hope to maybe go back and finish my PGCE at some point.

After the PGCE, I went to work as network manager at St. Bede's School, Cambridge. I enjoyed my time there, but decided to move on to a similar job where I would have more chance to apply my programming skills.

I now work as network manager at Alton Convent School, Hampshire, UK. My job here involves some Moodle use and development as well as running around plugging computers together.
